Hydrology at Utrecht University

Water is the most important constituent for life on Earth, supporting agriculture and natural ecosystems. It plays a vital role in the climate system, but it also manifests itself through devastating floods and severe droughts. It transports vital nutrients for plants, but is also the agent that transports pollutants through the ground.

Hydrology is the study of the water cycle, i.e., how water evaporates from sea and land, where and how much falls back onto the Earth's surface as precipitation, how much of is stored in soil and aquifers, and how it travels through rivers and underground to the seas and oceans. Through their understanding of the water cycle, hydrologists contribute to solving local and global problems concerning the overabundance, scarcity or quality of water.

Hydrology in Utrecht is based in the Faculty of Geosciences and distinguishes two groups: Earth Surface Hydrology and Environmental Hydrogeology.
